Acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and rosacea all linked to gut health?

After seeing a naturopath and taking a new approach to fixing my skin, it all made so much sense.

It makes me emotional just thinking about how many years I spent trying different products to try and fix my acne, only to realise I was actually addressing the wrong issue.

Like many people, I didn’t make the connection between my poor gut health and my shocking skin. I had no idea about the skin-gut axis.

After seeing a naturopath and taking a new approach to fixing my skin, it all made so much sense. I was educated on why looking at my gut, given how bad my IBS was, might actually be the key to addressing my skin issues.

Here is what my naturopath explained to me

• The nutrients required for healthy skin are extracted in the gut. An overgrowth or imbalance in bacteria in the gut can cause disruption to your ability to absorb nutrients required for skin (and general) health.
  ‍
• The skin is the largest elimination organ. A compromised gut will cause your skin to compensate, and this will manifest in your skin. Most commonly, in the very conditions I was seeing.

• Disruption to hormones. Our gut metabolises hormones, creates detoxifying enzymes and neutralises pathogens. Impairment to these can cause a systemic effect that shows up in your skin as inflammatory-based conditions (of which these skin problems are).

• Leaky gut or more correctly called intestinal permeability, is the process whereby toxins (waste) and proteins leak out of your gut and into your bloodstream, creating an immune reaction. Your gut is supposed to act like a selective draw bridge that uses something called tight junctions to let the thing that should go into the blood, out, and keep the things that shouldn’t in and traveling down stream to be excreted as waste.
  
  When the gut is in a compromised state, this ‘selective draw bridge’ doesn’t work as well as it should, allowing things to leak out. Repairing this mechanism can be a really important and often missed step in addressing skin issues.

Knowing the above information made it so clear why other products hardly helped me at all.

I had tried so many creams, ointments and even prescription medications for my skin. Some of them helped slightly but my skin always just reverted back to being the way it was. I would hate to do a tally of exactly how much money and time I wasted trying to fix this with things that were only ever going to provide a band-aid solution at best.

My naturopath recommends I take a systematic approach to rebuilding my gut microbiome without introducing any new bacteria strains that might not suit my unique ecosystem.
